About us...

Every generation wants the next one to succeed nevertheless, more than 32 million children in the United States live in families plagued by poverty. Even in situations where parents are working dilengently to provide economic security for their children, the challenge of meeting basic needs of food, shelter, clothing, and adequte medical care remains a daunting task.

We Are Here!

Power in Changing was formed to help meet a growing need in South Carolina. Most forms of financial assistance do not provide funds for diapering needs.

Additionally, many child care facilities require parents to provide diapers and wipes in addition to weekly tuition and fees. We know that being a parent is one of the toughest jobs there is; we also understand that doing it without the ability to provide for a child’s basic needs is especially hard. We are here to provide assitance and empower parents with the skills and tools needed to navigate the uncertanties of parenting.

When families are unable to meet their immediate needs, it is more difficult to focus on long-term goals. Those goals may include employment, housing, or education. Basic needs services are critical to getting people back on their feet and on the road to self-reliance.

Diapers cost an average of 23 cents each, which is $70 to $100 from the monthly budget of vulnerable families. In some cases, parents must decide whether they will buy dipaers or food and gas. Many times they choose food and gas. Babies who are diaper deprived, suffer from diaper rash, urinary tract infections, and yeast infections. They also tend to cry more and are often sleepless. This has a further negative impact on families expereincing high-levels of stress. The risk of child abuse and neglect also rises with every overused diaper.

According to the US census bureau, families living below the poverty line in Richland County account for 17.2% of the population. The average for the state of South Carolina is 18.1%. These statistics prove that there is a need to help empower these families by providing them with the basics supplies to ease the burden of poverty and enable them place more focus on improving their situations. The need is great; it requires many partners.
